Course Overview:
Why do individuals, groups, and states engage in conflict? What explains the prevalence of violent conflict around the world, and why is achieving lasting peace so elusive? These are just a few of the essential questions that participants will explore in this course. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the field of Peace and Conflict Studies, equipping participants with the key concepts, theories, and debates that shape the discipline. Through this exploration, participants will develop the analytical and theoretical tools necessary to understand the root causes of conflict, the dynamics of peacebuilding, and the diverse theoretical frameworks that inform conflict resolution strategies. The course encourages critical reflection, helping participants position their perspectives within the broader conversation on peace and conflict. It also introduces key conflict resolution methods, explores the role of mediation, Preventive diplomacy, peacekeeping, and examines the relationship between peace, justice, and democratic institutions in preventing violence and maintaining long-term peace. By engaging with a variety of conflict theories, participants will deepen their understanding of conflict origins, the prospects for resolution, and the principles of sustainable peace. The course concludes with simulated conflict resolution exercises, allowing participants to apply their learning in real-world scenarios, build practical conflict resolution skills, and work toward effective, lasting peace.
