COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces the academic study of world politics through both theoretical and historical perspectives. It combines diverse theoretical approaches in International Relations (IR) with their application to historical cases, current issues, and events.

The course is organized into two parts:

The first part focus on the purpose of studying international relations and introduce key IR theories. Topics include major schools of thought and their competing positions: power and anarchy (realism), cooperation and institutions (liberalism), international society (English School), justice (Marxist-critical theories), and contemporary approaches like postcolonial and poststructuralist theories.

The second part applies these theories to global political issues such as the causes of war and peace, international law, third-party intervention, environmental politics, nuclear weapons, terrorism/counter-terrorism, international institutions, and global governance.

By examining these topics, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how different schools of thought help us understand past and current global affairs.
